What is Microneedling?
Microneedling or Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), is a minimally invasive cosmetic skin treatment used to rejuvenate the skin and treat a variety of skin defects. The result is skin that has improved texture and firmness and reduced scar tissue, pore size, and stretch marks.
The procedure uses a device that contains several fine needles which are used to puncture the skin repeatedly at a depth of up to 2mm and create a controlled skin injury. This small injury prompts the body to react by producing new collagen and elastin fibers. Through this natural process, the skin forms new tissue. Within about a week, you will enjoy smoother and more radiant skin, and the color and texture will continue to improve over the next few months.
How does it Work?
By using the needles to create a controlled injury, the body’s natural healing process takes over creating collagen, which is a structural protein abundant in the skin. Collagen is responsible for the skin’s more youthful properties including texture and strength. As we age, the amount of collagen in our skin begins to decrease, leading to wrinkles and more noticeable scarring. The increased collagen generated by the procedure results in increased tightness and even a little more volume.

Does it Hurt?
Anything with “needle” in the name is sure to sound scary to many people, but you don’t need to worry.
Depending on the sensitivity of your skin, micro needling could cause some mild discomfort. However, a topical numbing cream can be applied to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
For 24-48 hours after the procedure, you will experience some redness and swelling. Many patients liken this discomfort to that of a typical sunburn.
What is the recovery like? And what do I need to do post-treatment?
Recovery typically takes 24-48 hours. Most patients will begin to see improvements within a week of the initial treatment, but we recommend giving up to 14 days to show results.
All you need to do during the recovery process is take care of and protect your skin. Stay out of the sun as much as possible and use a high-quality sunblock for two weeks after the treatment. In addition to this, do not perform any kind of exfoliation for at least one week after the procedure. Besides this basic care, there is nothing special you need to do before enjoying your new, rejuvenated skin.
Who Shouldn’t Have Micro Needling?
Microneedling is a non-invasive and relatively non-complicated procedure, and it is safe for people of all skin types and ethnicities. However, it is still unsuitable for some people. This includes people who:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Are prone to keloid scarring
- Have uncontrolled diabetes
- Have an active skin infection
In addition, if you are taking blood thinners a consultation will be necessary before deciding whether microneedling is right for you.
