Reversible Contraception – Nexplanon®, Mirena, and ParaGard®

Nexplanon®

NEXPLANON is a hormone-releasing birth control implant that is placed under the skin for women who prefer a long-acting option.

NEXPLANON does not need to be taken daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly (4 times a year). It is considered a long-term method because it prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years.

NEXPLANON is a soft and flexible implant that is inserted in a discreet location in the inner, upper arm. It is small in size (4cm in length, 2mm in diameter) so no one has to know that it’s there but you and your health care provider.

Mirena

If you’re looking to learn more about a convenient, reliable and effective birth control option, you’ve come to the right place.

Mirena is an IUD that releases small amounts of hormone to give you continuous birth control for as long as you want, for up to 5 years. It’s more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, contains no estrogen, and can be removed by your healthcare provider at any time so you can try to have another child.

First, What’s an IUD?

No birth control is right for everyone and there are risks associated with Mirena that you should know about. For detailed information about possible side effects, some potentially serious, please see Mirena Safety Considerations and the Patient Information.

ParaGard® Reversible Birth Control

Highly effective. Hormone Free. Reversible Birth Control

ParaGard® is the only reversible birth control that’s more than 99% effective, 100% hormone free and doesn’t require any daily routine. It’s a hormone-free intrauterine contraceptive (IUC) that can be placed by your doctor in a routine office visit. It starts working immediately, and it’ll protect you from pregnancy for as long as you wish: two, five, even up to 10 years. It’s also a flexible birth control option because it can be removed by your doctor anytime if you decide you’re ready to start trying to get pregnant.

And, unlike other forms of prescription birth control, it won’t alter your menstrual cycle—it remains natural.

How Does it Work?

Here’s what you need to know: ParaGard® is the only highly effective, reversible, hormone-free intrauterine contraceptive (IUC). It’s placed in your uterus by your doctor during a routine office visit. Basically, it prevents sperm from reaching and fertilizing the egg. But because it’s hormone free, ParaGard® will not stop your body’s natural menstrual cycle. It’s flexible enough to be removed anytime by your doctor when you’re ready to have a child, and when it’s removed you can start trying to get pregnant right away. It’s long-lasting pregnancy protection for as long as you want—two, five, even up to 10 years.
